SECTION 3: SITE LAYOUT

 

   LOCATE YOUR POOL IN A SUNNY AREA OF YOUR YARD. THE SUN WILL ADD NATURAL HEAT TO THE WATER AND PERMIT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, LONGER, MORE COMFORTABLE HOURS AT POOL SIDE.  CONSIDERATION SHOULD ALSO BE GIVEN TO WALKWAYS, PATIOS, AND PROXIMITY TO DRESSING FACILITIES

 

   WHEN STANDING AT THE DEEP END OF THE POOL AND FACING THE SHALLOW END, THE SUMMER SUN SHOULD BE PREDOMINATELY AT YOUR BACK OR SIDE, NEVER IN YOUR FACE.

 

   AVOID ROCKY AREAS, HIGH WATER TABLES, AND SEVERE SLOPES.   THESE CONDITIONS WILL ADD COST TO YOUR INSTALLATION. YOUR POOL AREA SHOULD BE FREE OF OVERHANGING TREES THAT WILL DROP LEAVES INTO YOUR POOL AND KEEP THE SUN'S RAYS FROM WARMING THE POOL WATER. POSITION YOUR FILTER  CLOSE TO YOUR POOL TO OBTAIN FILTER OPERATING EFFICIENCY. THE FILTER SHOULD BE IN THE SHADE IF POSSIBLE, BUT NOT IN A DAMP AREA

.

   THE HOLE WILL BE DUG 30' GREATER ON ALL FOUR SIDES THAN THE POOL SIZE. FOR EXAMPLE: A 16'x32' POOL WILL BE EXCAVATED 21'x37'. FOUR (4) STAKES WILL OUTLINE THE EXCAVATION.

 

STEP 1:   FROM STAKE "A" AT THE HIGHEST GROUND ELEVATION, LAY OFF THE DISTANCE OF ONE SIDE OF THE POOL TO STAKE 'B'. SEE FIGURE 1. YOU MAY WISH THIS SIDE OF THE POOL TO BE PARALLEL TO THE HOUSE, FENCE. BUILDING LINE, OR SOME OTHER EXISTING MARKING. USING STAKE "A" AS A PIVOT POINT, AND A STRING THE LENGTH OF LINE TWO, SCRATCH AN ARC ON THE GROUND AT AN APPROXIMATE RIGHT ANGLE (90 DEGREES) TO LINE ONE.

 

   USING STAKE "B' AS A PIVOT POINT, AND A STRING THE LENGTH OF LINE THREE, SCRATCH AN ARC ON THE GROUND. THIS ARC WILL INTERSECT THE ARC MADE IN STEP TWO AND DETERMINE POINT "C". DRIVE A STAKE INTO THE GROUND AT THIS POINT.

   WITH STAKE "B" AS A PIVOT POINT AND A STRING THE LENGTH OF LINE TWO, SCRATCH AN ARC ON THE GROUND AT AN APPROXIMATE RIGHT ANGLE (90 DEGREES) TO LINE ONE.

 

   REPEAT THE PROCESS USING STAKE "A" AS THE PIVOT POINT, AND A STRING THE LENGTH OF LINE THREE.  AT THE INTERSECTION OF ARCS DRIVE A STAKE INTO THE GROUND T0 ESTABLISH POINT "D".

 

   RUN A MASON'S LINE AROUND THE FOUR (4) STAKES TO OUTLINE THEEXCAVATION. THE EXCAVATION IS NOW SQUARED. THE LEVEL OF THE TOP OF THE POOL IS AT THE HIGHEST STAKE. SINCE THE POOL HAS TRUNCATED CORNERS. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO DIG OUT THE CORNERS OF THE EXCAVATION. STAKE ALL FOUR (4) CORNERS AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 2.

 

   RUN A STRING BETWEEN EACH OF THE STAKES AT THE CORNERS AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 2. MARK THE GROUND UNDER THE MASONS LINE WITH CHALK OR FLOUR. THE EXCAVATION IS NOW PROPERLY LAID OUT.

 

STEP 2: DETERMINE THE ELEVATION OF THE TOP OF THE POOL TO BE LEVEL WITH AN EXISTING PATIO, SIDEWALK, OR SOME OTHER OBJECT. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE TOP OF YOUR POOL BE AT LEAST 5" ABOVE THE HIGH POINT OF THE EXCAVATION GRADE. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT DURING A RAIN SHOWER THE WATER WILL NOT RUN INTO THE POOL CARRYING DIRT TO CLOUD THE POOL WATER.

 

   DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT THE ELEVATION OF YOUR POOL TO BE AND MARK THIS ELEVATION ON THE SIDE OF THE STAKE THAT APPEARS TO BE ON THE HIGHEST GROUND.

 

   USING A TRANSIT, TRANSFER THE POOL ELEVATION TO THE OTHER STAKES. SET UP A TRANSIT APPROXIMATELY 10' TO 20' FROM THE POOL EXCAVATION AREA BEING SURE YOU HAVE A CLEAR VIEW OF ALL SIDES OF THE POOL. ADJUST THE TRANSIT UNTIL IT IS PROPERLY LEVELED. IF YOU ARE UNFAMILIER USE OF THIS INSTRUMENT,WE SUGGEST THAT YOU SEEK THE AID OF AN EXPERIENCED PERSON.
